In the News Ms. Universe 2007 and some other stuff from Japan.

A big week for Japan in the world stage. Japans baseball players in America continue to do well. If you watched the morning/evening news you would swear they are the only players on the team. Funny I don't even like baseball but in Japan it is that or golf news. Snooze Snooze. Snooze. Ichiro continues to hit well. Matsui hit a 2 run homer but the rest of his team is not doing so well. A 71 year old man climbed Everest. I would like to still be physically active in my 70's but I really hope I do not have anything left to prove to myself or anyone else at that point. And finally a new Miss Universe was crowned and it was Ms. Japan. I think she is really hot! But that is just me. Apparently some Koreans and Venezuela's are a little upset because the Korean interrupter botched the job. A quote from smallscreen.monstersandcritics.com: From here "Ashley Korkova KimMay 29th, 2007 - 06:17:41 The translation for the Miss Korea Interview was not accurate. She said she wanted a superpower of making everyone happy. She wanted a power of being able to have a wallet that will be always full to do her missionary work. That translator was truly a mess and did no good for Miss Korea. Either Miss Venezuela or Korea should have one. They deserve it and truly have great ambitions to better our world. All Miss Japan wants to be is a dancer." Koreans are always a little pissed at the Japanese. Oh well. But It was funny and interesting as I did a little more research. All from my chair. I found this little tidbit. Apparently people bet on who will win Ms. Universe. Who'da Thunk?!? I wouldn't even care except some on I know from Shizuoka keeps making a big deal out of it and I can't escape it every time the TV comes on. The fact that she had 22 to 1 odds and still won is putting the gambling community on its ear. A side note to all the haters in Mexico if you don't like us so much or our policy's why do you insist on coming to America in droves. I have no love for any fool who gets on stage based solely on her looks, but to boo her cause you wish you were born in America. Pretty sad......

Geeks R US

So this weekend a bunch of TLUGers got together in Myoden for a BBQ. It was great fun as always. There was plenty of food and drink and FUN. Most important the 2 people I came with Eric and Satomi had a good time too. I think most would have a hard time understanding my geeky passion from time to time but here I was in good company. Funniest thing is, except for some trash talking during the competitions the shop talk was generally low. I spoke with more people about the state of the union in TLUG or about our kids and the things we struggle with in Japan. Or "That time that Josh....." Some of the highlights; The music was a total hit ... man Billy Squire ZZ Top just needed a little Kid Rock in there and it would have been UN F'ing BELIEVABLE! The events were awesome I would like to see if we can make them a staple. HD Tossing was a blast. The Americans in the crowd brought home the win for both teams. Go USA! Keyboard smashing was fun but putting them back together was infuriating. My strategy was simple and straight forward. Smash it with my fist. By my 3rd shot 90% of the keys were missing. I should have stopped there and peeled the remaining ones away.... but no smash smash smash. My hand swelled up a little bit afterwards and now the hand scanner at work doesn't know who I am and wont let me in anymore... :( I was pretty shocked that I lost that one. I thought just the pure brutality of my attack would do it but a woman with strong set of nails and a even stronger desire to get out of the kill zone won. The food was simply AWESOME! Beef, pork some lamb and veggies. Some one made curry and brought it along, there was rolls with little Penguins on them and possibly the best salsa I have ever had. Fun was had by all and thanks to Keith and Mauro for putting on the whole thing. It was one of the best parties I have been to in a long time. Thanks, E./

Ya I probably spelled that wrong. Over the last year of working here I noticed a few months ago that every day; I go to 7-11 in the building where I work and purchase a small something to eat or maybe a Coke or a Red Bull or a 2 liter of water. Some times twice a day. The latter 2 are most popular with me. EVERY time you go to 7-11 you get a plastic bag. Not being a tree hugging environmentalist I was kinda like meh...no big deal. It did seem pretty trivial though, a plastic bag for every little purchase. These plastic bags are used for a whole 1 to 3 minutes for the walk out of 7-11 into the building and up the elevator to my office. For 1,2, or 3 items I thought it was kind of a waste. SO now when I go to 7-11 I almost always say "so no mama de i" OR it is fine like it is. I have been doing it for about 6 months or so and I would bet I have saved the planet 120 + or so. Yeah!!!!

Here and There

I went home last month with Eric cause my mom was in bad condition. She died about a week later and I went back home for the funeral. I haven't really written anything about it just cause.... to busy or whatever. But I took this picture on the way back to Japan. It is important because, when I took it I said "... man mom will think this is a cool photo with the blue to black of ........" YA that is when I realized that I could not show her. Through the whole thing going to Florida the first time with Eric and seeing her in the hospital, to coming back for the funeral. All through out that whole 5 days it still did not sink in.... though all of the talking, hugs and crying from relatives. The beer and whiskey. Staying up late waking up early. Seeing her at the wake and Father Enrique's wonderful sermon it just did not sink in, till somewhere over the Barring Sea 12 katrilion feet off the earth and away from home. I realized.

IMAGES and JPEG on SOLARIS10

I use drupal for my blog/website the reason being is it has a unending selection of add ons and api's. Finally one day I decided to add some stuff on..... I wanted a easier way to add images. I went to add in the module and all was well. But things were not so well... as soon as I tried to add a imagine. The image was added but the thumbnail was not. Hmmm lets check and see whats going on. #ldd /usr/apache2/modules/libphp5.so libpng12.so.0 => /usr/local/lib/libpng12.so.0 libz.so => /usr/local/lib/libz.so libjpeg.so.62 => /usr/local/lib/libjpeg.so.62 libresolv.so.2 => /lib/libresolv.so.2 libm.so.2 => /lib/libm.so.2 libnsl.so.1 => /lib/libnsl.so.1 libsocket.so.1 => /lib/libsocket.so.1 libxml2.so.2 => /usr/local/lib/libxml2.so.2 libiconv.so.2 => /usr/local/lib/libiconv.so.2 libc.so.1 => /lib/libc.so.1 libgcc_s.so.1 => /usr/local/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 libmp.so.2 => /lib/libmp.so.2 libmd.so.1 => /lib/libmd.so.1 libscf.so.1 => /lib/libscf.so.1 libpthread.so.1 => /usr/lib/libpthread.so.1 libuutil.so.1 => /lib/libuutil.so.1 Hmm that looks ok you see the libjpeg in there. Then I looked at my initial configuration of PHP. ./configure --prefix=/usr/php --with-apxs2=/usr/apache2/bin/apxs --with-openssl --with-mysql=/usr/bin/mysql --with-gettext --enable-mbstring --with-gd --with-zlib-dir=/usr/include/zlib.h --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local/ Thats where everything should be I think.... I do a couple of recompiles with some other options when I checked my test php. Under GD NO JPG Support enabled HUH? I have all of the packages. I compiled with it GD and JPEG. WTF! #pkginfo | grep jpeg application SMCjpeg jpeg GNOME2 SUNWjpg jpeg - The Independent JPEG Groups JPEG software GNOME2 SUNWjpg-devel jpeg - The Independent JPEG Groups JPEG software - development files GNOME2 SUNWjpg-devel-share jpeg - The Independent JPEG Groups JPEG software - development files - /usr/share Hmm everything looks ok. I checked out sunfreeware.com and the GD package says it needs this stuff. GD Graphics Library - An ANSI C library for the dynamic creation of images. GD creates PNG and JPEG images, among other formats - installs in /usr/local. The gd package requires the following library files - libXpm.so.4.11 from xpm, libfreetype.so.6 from freetype, libfontconfig.so.1 from fonctconfig, libgcc_s.so.1 from libgcc-3.3 or from gcc-3.3.2, libiconv.so.2 from libiconv, libpng12.so.0 from libpng, libz.so from zlib, libexpat.so.0 from expat, and libjpeg.so.62 from the jpeg package. Well I got all that stuff its in there (I wont bore you with the details). But then I realize/am informed that PHP is compiled with its own GD.... So I started re-compiling finally after a couple of make and make distclean's and with a little help from a friend I got it right. How about this: './configure' '--with-apxs2=/usr/apache2/bin/apxs' '--with-config-file-path=/etc/apache2' '--enable-mbstring' '--with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql/' '--with-gd' '--with-jpeg-dir=/usr' '--with-zlib-dir=/usr' YEP that did But what I didn't see was '--with-jpeg-dir=/usr' '--with-zlib-dir=/usr' as apposed to --with-zlib-dir=/usr/include/zlib.h --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local/ Which was apparently the key to my GD compilation...

STRUGGLING

I have been struggling a little to come up with some stuff to post. Spring has been poping up all around and summer will be here soon. My life has changed quite a bit recently. I moved into a new place with my wife and my son. I went to America twice last month. My mom passed away. I am having trouble with my son. And it feels recently like I am tired ALL THE DAMM TIME. My knees hurt from ridding my bike with my kid on it and I have had a headache for about 6 or 7 days now. Could I just be getting old. Or more then likely I should just stop whining like a little girl and get back to work. I got some posts coming up so maybe I should get to them.....
