Man of the Match

Man of the Match
So the Tokyo Gaijin rugby football club, my team played the All France team.

We went onto the field with a very lazy attitude and it showed in the literal ass whooping we received.
We had not been beaten by All France ever since I had been on the team and I was pissed as I watched it happen in front of my eyes.

We did play most of our 2nd and 3rd string players and allot of them are use to having other players on the field that they can count on to show them the way. It was weird for me to be on the field with so many guys who had either never played for the team or never played. That may have been the other reason for our down fall.

The first half was over way to quick and at 1/2 time some one told me that I needed to come off the field. I was a little shocked cause, there were a lot more fatter guys who were sucking wind and not pulling their load. On the sideline I took off my head gear and jersey and prepared to help with water duty.

Some forwards went down with injuries and need to be replaced. I went back on with out my head gear, but more fired up then I had been in recent weeks. I got in and got it on. I jumped in line outs and contested winning every ball back for us except one. I tackled and rucked with ferocity that I had not had in a long time, and generally was in the right place at the right time, most of the game.

At one point I knocked some one out of bounds but was having trouble getting myself back up to my feet. Eric ran over with my head gear and handed it to me in a all excited voice like a 8 year old kid gets "Here Dad put this on it is good!" He helped me get it back on my head and helped me to me feet. I ran back out there and smashed on.

I came up just short of a try two times and was the first to the ball carrier on most kickoffs. I was on fire but the rest of my time the team was lack luster. Which is sad.

I love playing rugby but wont be able to play for a couple of months. It was good to go out with such a good game.

At the end of it all I was awarded Man Of The Match by our team captain.  I made a little beratying but true speach and said "It is a sad day when I am the Tokyo Gaijin Man of the Match. You are all better than the preformance we put out today."

At least that is what I meant to say.

Rumble in the Ricebowl

Wow rugby is getting good. This weekend we faced Baku & Clover (you can read more about it here)  and came away with a win thanks to a pair of tries from Toby and some hard grinding work from the forward pack and some good kick n chase by the back line. There was a bunch of other stuff going on at the same time. It was Chris "Feral" Fearon's  last game with us and I brought Miku my niece to the game with me. So I was a little stressed and hurried and did not have time to enjoy normal post match activities...... like beer. Still the match was good, I had a good couple of runs and am perfecting my smashing through technique with true Matt Downer style.
Rumble in the Ricebowl
Finally the Rumble in the Ricebowl is starting to heat up. The rumble in the rice bowl will be Australia against New Zealand in one of the last Bledsoe cup matches of the season. My team The Tokyo Gaijin Rugby Football Club is using this as a fund raiser, by selling promotional T-shirts and Polos. Check out the site, you can even buy t-shirts right there on line.

First Full Length Tokyo Gaijin Rugby Football Club Video on YouTube!

I spent allot of time trying to explain what I was thinking for a series of videos for my rugby team. Something that shows the great things about playing on the Tokyo Gaijin and what the guys are like. Everyone I talked to said it sounded good but were not really enthused as I was about the whole project. So I basically did it myself. Now that that the first one is in the can I think that other team members will be more keen to help out. Special thanks to Muz, Matt and Joffa for their input and error checking. Enjoy. E./

What a Game, What a Night

Wow, Tokyo Cup is over and for the first time in 6 or 7 years we made it all the way to the finals, and for the first time, I started and played 60 minutes out of 80 in possibly the biggest game of the season. E-mails were flying back and forth on the list all week about what we should do, what needed to get done, who would do it and how. I added my usual motivation that I am sure some could do with out. But still when it came down to it, it was just another game. For most of us. For some, like me it was probably the biggest game of my short career, and I was starting. I couldn't sleep the night before because it had been raining all night and continued to rain throught the day. My stomac was a mess all the way up till I arrived at the station where we met. Several of the guys came up and asked me how I felt about starting. "I thought you guys wanted to win?" was my typical response. We got to the stadium and it was a a stadium with bleachers and astro-turf. We changed in a real locker room and got outside to warm up. The rain continued to pour down. Our competition was a the last place team from first division Rokko East. If we win we would get a promotion to Division 1 the highest ranked Tokyo based team competition. The pressure was on, full on. We did a quick dress check and went into the locker room and had a quick team meeting. Almost everyone spoke about what this meant to them and what we had to do. I said the same thing I had said all week. "We need to execute." "Execute the basics of rugby." After warming up I felt a bit better and was really ready to play. We passed around the ball a bit more and then it was time to get started. It was still raining lightly when the first shot got fired down range. The kickoff went over my head into Murrays hands and it was on, FULL ON! Like with most games I do not recall what happened minute to minute and now as I write this it is almost 2 weeks ago. What I do remember is the emotion and the physical feeling of playing. The hits. Joe plowing into a guy so hard the guy dropped the ball and I picked it up and started running. Seeing Al fighting to get the ball out of the ruck and me charging in and rucking out some one or 2 guys. Kevin sprinting away from me and every one else in a run away try. Watching Ken as he sprinted down the sideline for his try. Matt kicking the ball away time and again to when we got to deep in our own territory. Joffa tackling EVERYONE who had the ball.

Sore Body Sore Mind

Ouch.

I woke up this morning and I was sore all over. Yesterdays Rugby game was brutal. The ensuing after party was equally brutal and my head is still pounding from all of the after match alcho abuse.

It was pouring down rain the night before and I thought for sure I would get a call in the morning saying the game was canceled. It wasn't and with the ground over 80 minutes from my house I woke at 6 AM to get out to meet the guys. I didn't bring Eric cause it was raining still, but not quite as hard.

When I got to the TobuDobutsu Kohen Station, 4 at a time we hopped into cabs and took a 3000 yen cab ride to the rugby field. I have a love hate relationship with this place. It has a great facility's for amateur rugby field in Japan..... showers a place to eat that servers rammen, curry and other tasty traditional food, and of course beer, and lots of it cheaply.

But the thing I hate about it .... is it is really in the middle of no where. It is a 80-90 minute train ride to get there. I have to change trains at least 3 times, and then we have to take a taxi that costs 3000 yen for 20 minutes to get to the field. This sucks so if your late, or in my case want to leave early, you usually have to foot the cab alone which can suck.

First practice of the year!

So we had our first practice of the year and it was tough. I have been running a bit and doing my normal calisthenics, that mixed with not drinking have been good and I felt good going into it.

Al had other things in mind, and my legs and back are feeling them right now.
I was late as were others but as soon as practice kicked off we started with some complex fitness drills and I wished Al would have mailed out a training plan during the week. Then I could have at least faked having a clue.

Training went on and we did a couple of new drills we had not tried. The one I especially like was 2 defenders against 3 attackers. A twist I would add or kinda change is make every one do it 30 times and after 10 go from touch to smother, the after 20, all willing go from smother to full tackle.

That was kinda the idea but I wasn't ready and Dan 120 KG English bull steamrolled me. I saw him coming but didn't think he was moving that fast. My mistake and as I flew through the air I realized I was.

After practice we sat down for some Chinese and talked about the upcoming tour to Manila and recent Christmas party. We also discussed the upcoming YCAC match that is sure to be a test.

Finally the one thing everyone agreed that one point the team needs to work on is substitutions. Not putting green guys like yours truly in without some one to shadow. It has been a long term problem that we all know the answer too we need a good steady sideline coach who it there all the time and knows who is who and what the players skill sets are.

Practice Pactice Pactice

We have had practice 2 weeks in a row. The next 5 weeks will be games. This was also our last practice with Joe as the coach and after doing so well in the 100 meter sprints I was looking forward to showing off a bit more. Of course always what I want and what ends up happening is different. We started with a quick game of soccer and I could feel that I was not warmed up enough to play and after a intense chest trap and left footed shot that JUUUUUUST went wide I felt every muscle in both legs just clamp shut. It was a pretty intense crapping type of pain that stayed with me the rest of practice. I was very disappointed as we did our 20 X 50 meter sprints only to be beaten 1/2 the time by my 5 year old son. Let alone being able to beat anyone else who I had beaten last week. I was not alone others felt similar affects as the practice got on. We did some Line out drills and rucking and mauling and it would have been allot better if more that 2 of the tight 5 and 3 of the loose forwards had shown. I understand that people have other commitments, but I know all these guys will be there next week to play, and I will not get to play more than 20 minutes. We did a team run and again I spent more time in the way then anything. I was not only in the wrong place more than twice but I was standing flat or not in the right position to receive the ball when I did. Later Joffa and Dave, Chris and Pallo pulled me aside and explained that; 1. I do not have to ruck over every single ruck or maul 2. I should run in a kinda lazy L pattern 3. I should if I can not make it into the ruck and the half back is already there be ready and moving behind the 5/8 and be ready to do a forward crash run and or pull defenders away from the ball as a dummy runner.

Rugby and BBQ

We had practice and a BBQ. The practice was hard fought training with a warm up team jog for a couple hundred meters followed by some stretching. Then the work began, 10 X 100 sprints. I was surprised at the fact that I could keep with Joe and had a good battle with So which he ended up trouncing me most races but I stayed with him. Practice went on as it usually does but we were missing a bunch of our forwards and that made the forward workout tough. We did a team run and I couldn't get things to click like I had previously and kept going offsides and getting in the way. ERRR! Finally we played touch and it was as always irritating I am not sure what it is about touch but it is so hard to grasp all the work we just did and having it come down to touch. Set pieces and other things do not happen all you can do is stay on a line in defense and try to go mark your man and not get caught out. Practice finished with some more calls and then A BBQ! BBQs are always a good time cause all the family members come and drink, cook, eat, talk and drink some more together. The kids who are all roughly the same age play and it is a good time for all. Wifes and kids eat free and the team sucks up the cost. It is really one of the best times to be part of the team. We had two new guys come out to training. Dan and Matt, said that they have been looking for a good social rugby team to play on for 11 months, I am sure they will both be back to play for us. On the way back Jesse saved me. As Eric and I were going up the escalator at the station a older man dressed in kinda Japanese biker styled clothes with a tan and a shaved head except a little tuft of hair in the front. Did what I can only describe as a rude gesture towards Eric. I got upset of course but he was going down the escalator and we were going up. So I let it go. But as we were sitting down to wait for the train, the guy came back up the stairs and started yelling at me in Japanese and calling me crazy which of course started me yelling back. I stood up and the guy moved on down to the other end of the tracks. Just then Jesse came up the escalator. I called him over and told him what happened he laughed. But now on the way back the guy looked at me and looked at Jesse and decided we were both a little more trouble than he was bargaining for. He walked silently past and went down to the escalator and appeared on the other side a few minutes later.

RAIN DAY GAME DAY

I got on my bike and made my way to the station. Joffa, Dave and I all met up, and wiated for the train. While we waited for kicks Joffa and I called up team members who we were unsure about or KNEW for CERTIAN that were not comming, and harassed them. Finally we arived and started getting the field ready which was a task bordering on futility. The line painters were all getting clogged up because of all of the rain and we were having alot of trouble measuring the lines and getting things straight. Durring that time a team mate informed me that the leader of the leuge (who is also the oppositions manager) said "Agghhh its raining to hard lets just do rock paper scissors and call it a game." After hearing that in my mind the game was already won. Our forward pack was strong all game and Murray kept things constantly rolling along. Our back line was also strong even though the conditions were not perfect for passing the ball. When we were up by a good number of tries, with about 15 minutes left I got the call to go in. My tackles are still weak and from the moment I got on the field I could feel that it was a problem. The slippery conditions made it tough even with cleats to get my footing. I do not think my tackles are particularly bad it is just my anticipation of what the runner will do and abilty to react to it quickly is well pitiful. This week during my personal training time I will try to see if there is some exercises I can work on to help rectify this. I think it is just a matter of 3 things; 1. Not standing to flat on my feet 2. understanding how to read a backs moves as to where he will run

Winners and loosers

1st game of the year. (JAPAN) Tokyo Gaijin VS The Crusaders. (WIN) I woke up in the morning and I just didn't feel right. I felt weak and constipated and just generally not in good health for a day of rugby. I did some last minute finishing touches to the fliers and then woke up Eric so he could watch some cartoons while I got our gear ready. After calling and waking the team manager Joffa up we aranged a time to meet and Eric and I were off to print some more fliers. We went back to Gera Gera where Eric refused to sit down and refused to be quite but I got the rest of them printed and we headed out to meet Joffa. After hooking up with Joffa his wife and Dave we got on the road, or the train so to speak and made our way to the meeting point. When we arrived at the station within a few minutes almost the whole team was there. It was awesome there was 15 guys at the station and when we got to the field there were another 5 at least. I started to feel a little better knowing I would not have to play a full game. We warmed up and practiced a bit and to quote Muz I felt a bit more "switched on" then normal. Still far from what I needed to be but playing defense against my own team in line outs and scrums helped me realize what my job was gonna be when I was in. If I got in. Practice finished up and I the starting line up was called out. I was not on it. I was a little bummed out not to be starting, because over the break I put a lot of work in for the team getting myself in shape, I ran about 10 times and I can feel my legs getting stronger. In addition to trying to improve my fitness, I have also been studying the game of rugby. Finally I have been working on the team site allot and been the pain in the ass that has gotten it up to date. I should have been carried around the rugby pitch by two of my team mates instead of having to run and get all sweaty.
