Holding the Light

It is hard to work with relatives I think, especially our elders. This weekend I needed to replace the battery in my wifes car. A simple enough task till you add in kids and relatives it goes from easy to aggravating to finally finished. I got back to the house with the battery and started to scrounge up the necessary tools. A crescent wrench was about the extent of the tools I could find that my father-in-law owned, along with a weird assortment of box-end and open-end wrenches that seemed to mysteriously skip all the sizes I needed. 10 mm on one side and 13 mm on the opposite side wrenches seemed most prevalent but were really unhelpful. Then my father in law got involved. Was it bad? Not really the Job got done. Was it fun? Oh hell no! Involving my father-in-law is worse than having my own father help. At least I understand my dad. Regardless I had no choice my fight or flight instinct had taken hold but I couldn't run ........ the battery was 1/2 out of the car and I had dropped one of the posts that holds the battery into the underpart of the car. Escape was not a option. Now my father-in-law was in there with his hands grabbing everything I was working on. I excepted my fate and relegated myself to holding the light. I have been holding the light since I was 5 and now some 30 years later I hate it even more. I know I can but the idea of shoving one of my elders out of my way is not what I am about. I respect my elders even if sometimes I want to strangle them.

A morning in Shibuya.

SO I finished my work at about 6 am and headed to work. I was kinda bored and hungry so I thought I would walk around a bit before I went to the office and get some pictures. The Stairway to heaven .... well Ootemachi station at least. Japanese people will sleep anywhere....this isn't the only guy I saw sleeping.... just the most convenient one to snap a shot of. Crows are out and about quite a bit picking at the morning trash. And although I thought that San Andres has been out for quite a while I noticed today that there was quite a bit of advertising for it out now.

Success Again!

Chalk another one up for the good guys! Another SUCCESSFUL maintenance!! I have been working allot to try to get things to a stable and right state of affairs in my part of the UNIX world. Today actually starting at 3:30 AM I woke up and made my way to the data center and had the simple operation of moving around some severs. It was not so bad but one was hella heavy. Captain Zero strikes again. Anyway that means a 1/2 day off starting around 1 or 2 followed by some beer drinking.... You down with that Bendal?

A little quiet please!

I run a FTP server out of my house that doubles as my desktop. It is about a 4 year old P4 2.4 GHZ. So when the processor fan started making noise I went looking for a new one.... 4 years in computer parts is like 20 in car parts and 80 in human years....... it is pretty high in dog years too. Needless to say I could not easily find a replacement. Easily is a relative term here in Japan, where nothing is easy. Yes I could have found one.... I just didn't feel like ordering it on line from Kazakhstan or hunting through junk piles in Akihabara. The 3 places that I go for parts didn't have one so I started looking at other options. Jason a fellow former Marine, who I met recently offered me a processor fan that he had extra and it looked as if it would fit. After a night of no sleep due to work and that fan grinding away I got home early enough to take my PC apart and see if it would fit. Unfortunately it was no good. Just a couple of millimeters to long on one side. This was the alternative. I cut the fan that I had on my system out with some with some wire clippers. After that I removed the new fan from the new heat-sink and checked to see if it would fit over my old heat sink that was firmly mounted on the motherboard.

So you say it's your birthday!

So you say its your BIRTHDAY?! Its my BIRTHDAY TOO! Last week January 25th was my 35th Birthday. How did I celebrate it. By having a quick Thai dinner with one of my friends....... followed by all night of working on a 7 year old Solaris Server. The night was not a complete loss....At about 430 I finished, made my way to Roppongi, and Proceeded to party up the remainder of the night till about 0730. When I went to work signed in and slept on the couch till it everyone else arrived. Get up then work for a bit and go home. Not how I want to spend my next or any further birthdays but not the worst one by any means. Even if I did turn 35. But this time of year allot of my friends have birthdays too. I have been meaning to send mail to each of them individually/call but instead I thought I would just shout out to them here (come on at least I didn't use your ages); Jan 19 Al and John Jan 20 Mitsuko Jan 21 Atsuko Jan 25 ME & Yoko! To everyone who acknowledged my birthday like Patrick and Jason for calling, Mary h Yoko, Atsuko for sending me mails, Shinobu and Nittin for taking me to lunch and of course Bawdo for saying Happy Birthday to me on the Tlug IRC! Thanks! E
